The festival of Karwa Chauth holds great significance for all married women across India. Observed mostly by Hindus and Sikhs, the festival of Karwa Chauth is a celebration of an unbreakable bond between a man and a wife. The annual festival of Karwa Chauth is quite significant in the northern states including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat.

Every year, it falls on the fourth day after the full moon day or Purnima of Kartika month as per the Hindu calendar. This year the festival will be celebrated on Sunday, October 24.

How the festival is celebrated
On this day, married women keep Karwa Chauth Vrat to pray for the long life and happiness of their husbands. They observe fast from sunrise to moonrise, apply henna, dress up, perform pooja and then break their fast by drinking water after seeing the moon at night. Some men and unmarried women also keep this fast for their significant others.

The day starts with eating sargi or pre-dawn meal, which is given to married women by their mothers-in-law. It includes an earthen pot or Karva, sweets, dry fruits, feni, saree and jewellery. Women observing fast wake up early in the morning before the sunrise, take bath, get ready and have items from the sargi. This is the only time they have food and water, then fast for the rest of the day they fast. While observing this festival there are some important rituals women need to follow to bear the fruit of their fasting.

Karwa Chauth Mehndi
Applying henna on hands is an important ritual of this festival that cannot be skipped at any cost. As per Hindu tradition, doing this enhances the longevity, spiritual enlightenment and intensifies the fertility of husbands. But this depends on region to region and personal choice.

Karwa Chauth Sargi
Sargi is the first and most important ritual of this festival. Married women observing the fast have to take bath in the morning and then have sargi before sunrise. The sargi a special thali that contains different types of foods and gifts given by the mothers-in-law.

Karwa Chauth Baya
Baya is referred to as a special Karwa Chauth gift sent to the mother-in-law by the daughter-in-law. It contains dresses, jewellery, food, utensils and other gifts. Married women observing fast offer this to their mothers-in-law and seek their blessings.

Karwa Chauth Shringar

Donning new clothes, especially in red colour dress and doing solha shringar is an important ritual of Karwa chauth. It is important for two reasons firstly it symbolises happy marriage and the long life of the husband. Secondly, getting ready helps to distract women from hunger and thirst.

Karwa Chauth Pooja and Katha
To complete the fast, it is important to listen to the Karwa Chauth Katha and perform the pooja in the evening. Without this, the pooja of Karwa Chauth is not considered complete. Married women pray to Goddess Parvati for the long life of their husband and happy married life.

Breaking the fast

Women break their fast in the evening after sighting the moon. They first pray to the moon then drink water from their husband's hand. After this, they can have food prepared at home.
