Beat the heat in a 'clean way', without that excess greasy feeling
With the advent of summers, comes the inevitable extremely greasy skin. One of the major reasons behind the ‘oil-mines’ skin can be the imbalance of sebum production by sebaceous glands in our body. Sebum, an oily, waxy substance, is considered as one of the main ingredients of natural oils produced by your body. Face, scalp, and chest have the highest concentrations of sebaceous glands. The antibacterial properties of sebum help our body to fight unwanted infections and other issues.

When it comes to sebum quality and production, a toxic beauty-regime acts as a tough-toll on our inbuilt elements. The frequent use of toxic products washes away sebum from skin and scalp. Our healthy hair is bound to get brittle and dry with the sebum getting washed away from our scalp.

Why sebum production is important?
Sebum acts as a protective shield for the skin from UV radiation and oxidative skin damage. It supports skin health in several ways beyond combatting inflammation, promoting skin hydration as well as flexibility and transporting fat-soluble antioxidants to the surface of the skin.

Low Sebum production- Reasons and Ways to Balance it

Consumption of contraceptive pills, antiandrogens, etc, decrease sebum production. Starvation and long-term malnutrition are also known to be contributing as factors for low sebum production .

The lack of sebum oil can lead to the breakdown of skin's moisture barrier, causing it to become dry and flaky. In case you are dealing with dry skin and intend to increase sebum levels, these are the suggested steps to be followed:

1. Switch to lukewarm water instead of hot water baths, as hot water can strip-off skin's natural oils.
2. Topping your skin with good humectants, like hyaluronic acid, which draws moisture from the environment to moisturise the skin, seals the deal.
3. Drinking plenty of water and eating omega 3 rich foods is the spell to swear-by.

Overproduction Of Sebum- Reasons and Ways to Balance it

Hyperactive sebaceous glands are responsible for the over-production of sebum, making your skin look oily and greasy. Forehead, nose bridge, upper cheeks and chin are the chronic battleground for sebum over-production. Large pores, oily skin, blackheads, and whiteheads are some of the skin problems due to overproduction of sebum. Here are some easy ways to keep sebum overproduction under check: -
1. Massaging ice packs on face to reduce sebum production and unwanted simulation of sebaceous glands.
2. Oil cleansing helps in replacing dirt and excess sebum from face to settle minor skin issues.
3. Clay packs can be used to remove excess oil, dirt and dead skin cells from blocked pores.

Balance your sebum production-

Healthy digestion is the first step in balancing sebum. Adding foods that are high in good fats, such as coconut milk, walnut, almonds and foods rich in omega and Vitamin E, are also recommended. Revamping the cosmetics list and adding clean beauty options will act as an armour in your battle against sebum overproduction. Thus, now is the time to beat the heat in a ‘clean-way’.
