Why do we still have the Aarogya Setu app? What happened to the data we shared on it? In response to a recent RTI application, the government has stated that the Data Access and Knowledge Sharing Protocol of the Aarogya Setu application has been discontinued since May 2022.
Purportedly, this has been done with the view to transitioning the application from a Covid-19 specific contact tracing application to a more generic “national health app”. However, the discontinuance of the protocol has led to concerns on what will happen to the personal data of the app users collected over the last two years. But before we go into that, let’s look at how the need for it came about.
