Maharashtra reports 2,149 Covid-19 cases, 29 deaths

After an uptick in new cases in the last four days, Maharashtra on Friday reported slightly fewer coronavirus infections at 2,149.As many as 29 Covid-19 patients died in the state during the day, while 1,898 patients were discharged from hospitals, said a health official.The state's caseload increased to 65,88,429 and death toll reached 1,39,734, he said. Man held with mephedrone worth Rs 21 lakh in Mumbai

The Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Mumbai police has arrested a 40-year-old man with mephedrone worth Rs 21 lakh from suburban Kurla, an official said on Friday.The Kandivali unit of the ANC apprehended Santosh Shivnath Halwai while on patrolling duty in Kurla (west) on Thursday, he said.The police recovered 210 gm of mephedrone, worth Rs 21 lakh, from the accused's person, the official said.

Four persons arrested with fake currency notes in Mumbai

The Mumbai police's crime branch has arrested four persons for possession of fake currency with face value of Rs 2.28 lakh in the western suburb of Malad here, an official said on Friday.Acting on a tip-off, the crime branch's Unit-10 laid a trap and apprehended the accused who had come to sell fake currency notes at Marve Road in Malwani on Wednesday, the official said.The police team recovered 144 fake currency notes in denomination of Rs 2,000, he said, adding that the accused were arrested after interrogation.

Covid-19: Kalyan Dombivli reports 40 new cases, one death

The twin cities of Kalyan and Dombivli in Maharashtra's Thane district reported 40 new Covid-19 cases on Friday.According to the latest data by Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC), most of the cases came up in Kalyan west (16), followed by 10 in Dombivli east, seven in Dombivli west and six in Kalyan east.One person tested positive in Manda-Titwala region, while no new cases were reported in the Mohane region.Also, one more death was reported in the KDMC limits.

Congress corporator from Bhiwandi remanded to ACB custody in bribery case

A co-opted corporator of the Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNMC) in Maharashtra, who was arrested for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 50 lakh, has been remanded to the Anti-Corruption Bureau's (ACB) custody till October 20, an official said on Friday.Congress corporator Siddeshwar Kamurti (62) was produced before the judge at the district court and was remanded to ACB custody.The accused had allegedly demanded Rs 2 crore from owners of shops at a complex in the town to prevent the civic body from razing the structures, the official said.

Maha govt approves new police promotion policy, personnel to benefit

The Maharashtra government has decided to promote junior police personnel to the post of assistant inspector or sub inspector, which in turn would boost the morale of the force and increase its efficiency, officials said on Friday.The decision, which has been approved by chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, would benefit 45,000 personnel in the hawaldar and other ranks, they said.

Income Tax searches in Maharashtra reveal unaccounted income of over Rs 184 crore

The Income Tax department carried out search and seizure operations on two real estate business groups of Mumbai and certain individuals/ entities associated with them and found incriminating documents, evidencing unaccounted income of over Rs 184 crore.According to a statement issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the search operations commenced on October 7 and have been carried out at about 70 premises spread across Mumbai, Pune, Baramati, Goa and Jaipur.
