E-mail asking alumni of Bengaluru school to change name of Gyanvapi Masjid stirs row

Following the controversy over an e-mail asking its alumni to change the name of Varanasi's Gyanvapi Masjid to Gyanvapi Temple on Google Maps, a private school here said it was sent without proper screening procedures. The email that was sent to alumni a couple of days ago purportedly gave detailed instructions on how to change the location, which had drawn sharp criticism from a section of alumni and social media users.

With proceedings shifting to the court of the Varanasi district judge in the Gyanvapi case, district government counsel (civil) Mahendra Prasad Pandey told TOI that Anjuman Intejamia Masjid (AIM), which manages the Gyanvapi Masjid, invoked Order VII, Rule 11 of the Civil Procedure Code to question whether the petition seeking the right to unhindered worship of Goddess Shringar Gauri and other deities along the outer wall of the mosque was maintainable. On May 20, the Supreme Court had transferred the trial of case no. 693/2021 Rakhi Singh Vs UP government and others in which Hindu parties are seeking worshipping rights at Shringar Gauri and other deities in Gyanvapi premises from the civil judge (senior division) court to the district judge in Varanasi.

During the hearing which lasted for nearly 45 minutes, while the lawyers of Anjuman Intejamia Masajid, the management committee of Gyanvapi mosque, questioned the maintainability of the main plea from the Hindu side, the plaintiffs' lawyer requested the court to examine the evidence found during the court commission survey to prove that temple existed at the mosque's site.
