PUDUCHERRY: Puducherry legislative assembly speaker R Selvam sustained a mild heart attack on Tuesday before chairing fourth day proceedings of the ongoing budget session. Selvam left home in his car for assembly in the morning to attend the budget session commencing at 9.30am. When he was about to reach assembly, he suffered a mild attack, and the driver diverted the vehicle to Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Postgraduate Research Institute where a team of doctors attended him immediately. The doctors on duty said the speaker was stable. Lieutenant governor (additional charge) Tamilisai Soundararajan and chief minister N Rangasamy visited Selvam at the hospital and inquired about his health with the team of doctors. The doctors later referred him to a private hospital in Chennai for advanced treatment.
Selvam underwent angioplasty and stenting to clear blocked arteries in his heart a few years ago. Deputy speaker P Rajavelu, who was elected unopposed on the day one of the budget session, is conducting the proceedings.
