PUDUCHERRY: The Election Commission of India
) will hold polls for the lone Rajya Sabha
seat in the Union territory of Puducherry
on October 4. The term of office of Rajya Sabha MP N Gokulakrishnan
(AIADMK) expires on October 6 and the commission has decided to hold elections to fill the vacancy.
In a press note, ECI under-secretary Prafull Awasthi said the commission would issue a notification in this regard on September 15. It will receive nominations until September 22 and scrutinize the nominations on the next day. The last date for withdrawal of candidatures will be September 27.
The commission will hold the polls between 9am and 4pm on October 4 and will take up counting at 5pm and declare the results on the same day.
The commission directed the Puducherry chief secretary to depute a senior officer to ensure that the instructions regarding Covid-19 containment measures are complied with while holding the polls.
In the 30-member assembly, All India NR Congress
has 10 seats and its ally BJP six while in the opposition side DMK has six and its ally Congress two. There are six independent candidates and three nominated members (BJP). Both AINRC and BJP are keen on securing the lone seat.
